I Accidentally Brought My Gun to the Airport
What Happens Now?
Traveling with firearms requires strict adherence to federal and state regulations, especially at busy hubs like Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Understanding these rules is essential to ensure a smooth journey and avoid potential legal issues.
TSA guidelines for transporting firearms
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has clear protocols for travelers wishing to transport firearms:
- Unloaded firearms: Ensure all firearms are completely unloaded before traveling.
- Proper storage: Place firearms in a locked, hard-sided container to prevent unauthorized access.
- Declaration: Declare the firearm and any ammunition to the airline during the check-in process.
- Ammunition packing: Ammunition must be securely packed in a fiber, wood, or metal box and can be stored in the same hard-sided container as the firearm.
North Carolina state laws and CLT policies
Beyond federal regulations, travelers must also consider North Carolina state laws and specific policies at CLT:
- Firearms in terminal areas: North Carolina law generally prohibits carrying firearms in airport terminal areas, even for concealed carry permit holders.
- Vehicle storage: Firearms may be stored in vehicles on airport property, provided they are secured and not brought into prohibited areas.
Firearm incidents at CLT
Firearm detections are on the rise at CLT.
- 2025: In January and February of 2024 alone, the TSA says it found 27 firearms at CLT, more than any other NC airport during that time. For the first two months of 2025, the TSA has found at least 50 guns in N.C. airports, a number nearly triple what it was for the same period in 2024.
- 2024: TSA officers detected 117 firearms at CLT, a slight decrease from the previous year's 124.
- 2023: A record 124 firearms were found at security checkpoints, up from 117 in 2022. Shockingly, 93% of those guns were loaded.
These incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and adherence to firearm transportation regulations.
Common mistakes and the consequences
Travelers often encounter issues due to:
- Forgetting firearms in carry-on bags: The most common explanation from passengers is that they forgot the firearm was in their possession.
- Improper packing: Failing to unload firearms or using inappropriate storage containers can lead to violations.
- Assuming concealed carry permits apply: Even with a permit, carrying firearms into restricted airport areas is prohibited.
Failure to comply with these guidelines can result in substantial fines and potential criminal charges. A standard first offense for carrying a loaded gun through a TSA checkpoint is a $3,000 fine but can go as high as $15,000. You may also lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility.
Recommendations for travelers
To ensure compliance:
- Thoroughly inspect luggage: Before heading to the airport, check all bags to ensure no firearms are present unless properly prepared for transport.
- Review airline policies: Airlines may have additional requirements for transporting firearms and ammunition.
- Allocate extra time: Arrive early to accommodate firearm declaration and inspection processes.
By diligently following these guidelines, travelers can ensure a safe and compliant experience when flying with firearms through CLT.

Eric Meredith represented me during what turned out to be a lengthy divorce settlement. During the first meeting, he fully explained the process ahead and answered all my questions and concerns. I still remember the feeling of relief after that meeting knowing I had a true professional in my corner. Eric, along with his Paralegal Julie, kept me updated along the way and were quick to respond with any additional issues. Not only did he call with any updates to the case, he also would ask how I was doing. I cannot recommend Eric at Jetton & Meredith enough.- Tim

I cannot stress enough how great the customer service was with Jetton & Meredith, with my case being a little more complicated I had the opportunity to work with both Mr. Jetton and Mr. Meredith. I can say they know their stuff, Mr. Jetton was able to get my case dismissed the first time we went to court, no questions asked. Working with Mr. Meredith was a longer process but he walked me through the steps and gave me realistic expectations of an outcome that he was able to provide just as he stated he would do. I couldn’t be more pleased with my decision to hire Jetton & Meredith as my attorneys, and I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of an attorney!- Former Client
